ian/kh - Are you insane!? Well okay maybe not as much as I am but, no I didn't say all that during the interview. To be fair, they were stern but offered useful advice when I (I guess) didn't answer up to their standards.
A company has three jobs available - Service Medic, Photographer and Quartermaster. Three people are hired and are waiting to be allocated a job. Let's see how the company goes about designating the jobs...
A service medic's job is to tend to minor injuries (cuts, sprains) with delicate care - proper treatment must be given so as to avoid opportunistic infection. The company has two people to choose from: the first intends on pursuing Medicine as a career, is fairly compassionate, loves going hands-on and could probably perform a brain craniotomy blindfolded with both hands tied. Maybe not, but he certainly would do well in the job. The second fellow is perpetually found sitting in a corner, a PSP in his hands. He shows little competence in providing medical service - Recruit Wets once accompanied his upperstudy into the medical centre as the latter had a sprained ankle and a knee cut. After (over?)application of ice to the sprain by Second Fellow, the sprain got worse and Wets's upperstudy could barely walk. Wets's upperstudy remained lying down - in pain - on the couch as told to by Second Fellow; only 20 minutes later did PSP-wielding Second Fellow become aware of the rather prominent cut on Upperstudy's knee, and finally tend to it. Then he quickly returns to his corner. The company chooses Second Fellow over m- er, First Fellow. Why!? I'd like to know, too :/
Second job - photographer. The name says it all; he has to cover every darn event, shoot dozens of photos each time and sift through them later to pick the best for publication. First fellow - has covered a staggering number of events while at school, has had abounding experience handling DSLRs and (he admitted to me) would PAY to have such a job in the company. Second fellow - has zero interest in photography. Wants to become a doctor next time. Only camera ever operated is his teeny weeny point-and-shoot, which was mostly used to take shots of little bacteria colonies, rotting tomatoes and the like, not people. No experience with DSLRs at all. What does the company do? Shove a $1000+ Nikon DSLR into Second Fellow's hands and give him the job of course! And, expect him to take professional quality photos. What does he do? The first event he gets to cover, he spends precious moments fumbling with the DSLR when the 'Subject is too dark' screen refuses to go away - only to realize later that the lens cover was still on. Oops!
Third job - quartermaster. Easily the easiest job of the lot (cwutididthar). All the quartermaster needs to do is fill in forms when troops want to borrow some stores/weapons/equipment/ammo (o wait you can't borrow ammo!), which happens at most twice a day. Rest of the time, relac in air con room. First fellow - dislikes hard work. Wants easy job. Remains focused on PSP most of the time. Knows enough English to write, that is, fill in forms properly. Second fellow - previously nominated Chairman of his class due to outstanding performance. Able to juggle multiple tasks at any one time, has a constantly active mind and dislikes sitting still very much. Read University level textbook on Chemistry during Sec 4 holidays. Genius. Holds much potential to be exploited in other jobs, such as photography aka his one love/passion/obsession/you get the idea. Would be a waste if he was made quartermaster. Sadly, he was.
All job allocations are made by the company itself - no say is given to the employees.
Maybe that's why the company prides itself on being...a decisive force!
